Ten Social Book Marking Sites and Reasons Why They Are Good

By Wendy On February 1, 2008 No Comments

Social book marking is a method of sharing Internet bookmarks and there are many sites which let you distribute your most liked web pages amongst a network of other users.

Listed below are a few of the most popular ones.

technorati.com – This is a site which boasts nearly one and a half million visitors each month and allows users to share their blogs, videos, photos and much more.

del.icio.us – One of the first social book marking sites to really take off, this remains extremely popular today.

digg.com – With 8.7 million viewers each month, this site offers visitors instant information and statistics on their chosen topic.

stumbleupon.com – A fairly new site combining myspace with social book marking, offering users five pages of their own on any subject they wish.

reddit.com -This site has all the latest on what’s new and what’s hot at the moment and gives information on the weekly statistics.

fark.com – The main page of this site displays categories which allow the user direct access to topics including business, politics and sport.

mybloglog.com – This site combines social book marking, networking and blogging.

blinklist.com – This website is currently in beta testing and its mission statement refers to how people can use the service to keep track of their own research.

ma.gnolia.com – Not quite the size of some of the other sites, but easy to use with loads of information to help the visitor to understand social book marking. This is a great source for beginners.

tailrank.com – This site follows the conversations between blogs to help find out what is popular on the web. Users can search on any chosen topic or take a random view through several categories on anything from politics to entertainment

Whilst these sites all share social book marking, they are quite different from one another because they are aimed at special audiences. In order to get the most from these sites you may wish to use a combination of many of them. For example you could list your blogs on technorati.com and ping the site when you bring your blogs up to date. Another option is to join a site like stumbleupon.com and set up five web pages about a choice of topics which can be found on your own website. So if your website contains information on guinea pigs, one of your stumbleupon.com sites could feature information about how to feed guinea pigs and another page could explain the type of environment they should be kept in and so on and so forth.

In the meantime, continue with your bookmarks in del.icio.us to share with other users and pay a visit to a site such as tailrank.com to keep abreast of what others are blogging about. This can trigger off new blog posts for your own blog, which would mean you’d have more pings for technorati.com and so the cycle continues.

These fundamentals work together in creating more buzz for your website and establishing contact with people sharing similar interests. This could increase web traffic and even lead to the possibility of a joint project at some point in the future which will generate even more web traffic, but that’s a whole new topic for discussion on another day.
