Now let me explain.

From time to time I receive emails from other moms that want to work online from home and they ask me various questions, but in the end the conversation usually goes something like this:

Psychic Search WordPress Plugin

I’m a HUGE fan of WordPress plugins. I could spend hours at the WordPress Plugin Database just browsing around seeing what neat little treasures I can find, but of course I have work to do, so I try to keep myself under control.

Every so often I hear about a new plugin or come across a whole list of plugins that some other WordPress blogger says they use, etc.

I usually check them out right away to see if perhaps there is something that could improve my current blogs or if there is a plugin that might work better than an existing one that I’m using.

Yesterday, I received an email from MaxBlogPress notifying me of a new plugin that has just been released, which is called Psychic Search.

Basically, Psychic Search is a plugin that allows you to see what keywords your web visitors are searching for on your blog within the last 24 hours (It also keeps records for the last 7 and 3o days as well).

At first glance from reading their post ( Psychic Search ) I was thinking that I could just use my web stats for this purpose, as that’s what I usually do. So I was just going to pass on the plugin. Just as I was about to click away from their site, I thought I would give it a try anyway.

I installed it on my blog at Mommies Magazine yesterday to give it a test run. This morning I logged into my admin area expecting not to find any results but that wasn’t the case at all.

I was happy to find several search terms that had been used recently on my blog (some were quite strange) and have decided to keep this plugin activated. Here are the reasons why I’ve already decided that I like it

1. I can set the options so that searches performed by myself (admin) or any logged in users are not counted.

2. It’s so much quicker to view the stats from the WordPress dashboard than having to take an additional step to login to my hosting account to view the stats from there.

3. I can decide which type of user can see the stats. For example, if I have my virtual assistant setup as an Editor I can give her access to the stats as well. She then can take those keyword results and have articles written on those topics - since obviously that is what my web visitors are interested in reading about.

It’s Back - Coupon Maker Tool

The post below was originally written back in December 2006. Some things have changed since then and I wanted to touch base on this topic to bring everyone up to speed.

Wikis – The Disadvantages

A wiki is a tool allowing several users to join forces with each other by means of a group website. Each user can insert or vary the wording of the text as well as upload files, by merely using a web browser. Whilst there are many advantages to be had by using a wiki, it has to be said there are some disadvantages too.

• A wiki is web based which means that once put into cyberspace it can easily be found by others. Wiki’s can be made more secure by the use of a password but that will not guarantee that no-one else will be able to hack into it. It only takes one password holder to trust someone else, and before you know it your password will be know by all and sundry. Therefore, it you are working on a project which you really do not want anyone else to view, a wiki is probably not the best option for you.

• Although wikis do simplify matters when several people want to brainstorm and work together on projects by adding content to a group website, it still requires someone to keep tabs on what is being put on and this can get quite confusing. The great ideas of the team may turn into one big mess if no-one is controlling the content of material. It may help to solve this problem by designating one particular person to organize the wiki and its contents.

• There are always going to be less tech-savvy members of the group but they should be helped and encouraged by others in the team, to avoid the whole group losing out on the ideas they may have but are not confident enough to add to the wiki themselves

• It often happens that a particular member of the group is lazy about carrying out their share of the necessary work. This is when ideas get stolen and people not due to take the credit reap the benefits for ideas they are not really responsible for.

• What would happen if whilst traveling you lose your internet service or simply cannot find a connection? As the wiki is web based, you will not be able to access your work as you have no internet connection

• Another disadvantage is the fact that there are so many different types of wikis to pick from. How to install and back it up can sometimes cause bewilderment.

The above mentioned disadvantages are just a few of the things that can go wrong with a wiki and it is essential to realize that using a wiki can have many great advantages as well. You need to weigh up both the positive and negative sides before you decide on whether or not to use one. You may choose to dabble with one, maybe on a personal level in the beginning before progressing to the use of one for your business.

Social book marking is a method of sharing Internet bookmarks and there are many sites which let you distribute your most liked web pages amongst a network of other users.

Whilst these sites all share social book marking, they are quite different from one another because they are aimed at special audiences. In order to get the most from these sites you may wish to use a combination of many of them. For example you could list your blogs on technorati.com and ping the site when you bring your blogs up to date. Another option is to join a site like stumbleupon.com and set up five web pages about a choice of topics which can be found on your own website. So if your website contains information on guinea pigs, one of your stumbleupon.com sites could feature information about how to feed guinea pigs and another page could explain the type of environment they should be kept in and so on and so forth.

In the meantime, continue with your bookmarks in del.icio.us to share with other users and pay a visit to a site such as tailrank.com to keep abreast of what others are blogging about. This can trigger off new blog posts for your own blog, which would mean you’d have more pings for technorati.com and so the cycle continues.

These fundamentals work together in creating more buzz for your website and establishing contact with people sharing similar interests. This could increase web traffic and even lead to the possibility of a joint project at some point in the future which will generate even more web traffic, but that’s a whole new topic for discussion on another day.
