Signing Up To Two Lists With One Form

June 15, 2007

I’ve been asked if there’s a way to subscribe people to two lists when they signup for a free newsletter. The trick is, the two lists are on separate systems, she doesn’t have control over one of them. The answer is yes, with a little bit of custom coding.

However, I caution anyone when doing this and it’s not related to the technical part. Email subscriptions today can be a sensitive issue. I would be very careful doing this. You should clearly let people know what they are signing up for up front. If I were told I’m signing up for a freebie and find out I’m actually subscribed to two different list only one of which I gave consent to, I’m going to be rather upset. So while technically it is possible, it’s good business practice to be truthful with our prospects.

Useful Gmail Tip

June 1, 2007

When you use Gmail, you gotta re-wire your brain a little to get the most out of it. For example, most of us are familiar with columns in our email readers. There are subject columns, sender, read, unread, date etc. Clicking the header of these columns sorts the emails in the order we want.

I was doing some spring cleaning and wanted to delete all unread mail. Hey, if I never got to read them after 1 month or more I must not miss that much. But the problem was, how do I pull up all my unread emails in Gmail to process them? I couldn’t find a button or something to click on that will do it. Then I found the answer - why it’s using search of course. If you type is:unread in the search box and hit search mail, you’ll pull up all the unread messages in your in box.
Also, if you want to sort (filter is a better word really) emails within a certain label, you’d type label:labelname keyword. There are a lot of very useful advance search operators for Gmail. You can find them here.
