Lately, I’ve been thinking about my online business and what I really need to do to gain more focus. It seems that I’m not the only one that is thinking about the same thing. Tiffany Dow has decided to take 30 days off to refocus on what she’s doing in her online business. I’ve been following along with her as she’s been vlogging on a daily basis and sharing her thoughts and ideas with her viewers.
I have several projects going on, as does Tiffany right now, so I can really relate to that. Let me tell you a little bit about my history and the reason why I have multiple projects going on.
Back in 2003 I had one website, which was an online directory for gift basket businesses. I sold advertising space and worked on SEO to bring the site high in Google rankings. I remember ranking quite well for the term “gift baskets” at one point (which was and still is a very competitive term). Anyway, I was making really good money, things were doing really well, and I was learning more about SEO and applying those newly learned skills to the site – life was good! Hey, I was making much more than I had originally anticipated.
If you’ve ever heard the saying “Don’t put all of your eggs into one basket” – it is so true! One day I received several emails from some of the gift basket business owners that had paid advertising within the directory, they all basically said the same thing – They couldn’t find their listing, the directory wasn’t showing up in Google, etc.
Well, when I did some investigating I found that my site had been dropped from their index. My heart sank. Here I had tons of gift basket businesses paying to be listed on my site and now my site wasn’t even listed in Google. They didn’t care if I was still in MSN and Yahoo – Google was and still is at this time the “big player”.
I received many emails from angry people, lost out on a bunch of income because I was dropped from Google, and spent many nights trying to figure out what the hell happened. My site was eventually indexed into Google again, but I was feeling like I went 3 steps back and just couldn’t get to where I had left off. I sold the site and said never again.
The one big lesson I learned when it comes to online business? “Don’t put all of your eggs into one basket”. If I had other means of online income at that time, I wouldn’t have felt the “crunch” of that lost income as badly. Sure, I still would have worked my butt off to get that site ranking in Google again, but I still would have had income coming in from other sources during that time.
There’s also another lesson to be learned about “Don’t put all of your eggs into one basket”, but I’m going to save that for another post.
