When people are introduced to affiliate marketing they also have to face some difficult decisions on which affiliates to work with. There are thousands of affiliate programs to get involved with, but choosing the best ones for you can be tricky. It is best to be selective in the beginning because if you promote the wrong affiliate programs it might reflect on your reputation as a business, or just be a waste of time. Here is some advice on how to choose the right affiliate programs for you.

When you are searching for affiliate programs keep your target market in mind. What type of products does your target market want? What will they purchase? If your target market is people that are interest in cell phones, then putting restaurant and hotel affiliate ads won’t be beneficial for them.

Make sure you believe in the affiliates product or promotion. You have to be able to back up what is on your site and what you are advertising, regardless if it is your product or not.  If you would not recommend the affiliates product to a friend, then don’t bother using them.

Many affiliate programs will pay you commissions when you sell an item. Some programs are different however, and might just pay you per click. This type of information will help you decide on what program you are looking for. It really depends on if you like the commission rates or the lead rate better. Choose wisely and don’t just compare commission rates. In some cases you will earn more by promoting a product that has a lower commission.

Look at the product price of your affiliate programs. If the affiliate price is too high it might scare people away and if it is too low some people or clients might think there is something ‘off’ about the product or service. Make sure you research the products you will be displaying on your website. After all, everything you promote on your website will be a representation of what your business does as well.

Affiliate companies will pay you in all different ways. Some might pay you per month and some might pay you biweekly. In some cases, some affiliate programs pay out every three months. Make sure you know all the rules of each affiliate company as you sign up. Keep copies of their commissions and rules so you can constantly refer back to what you need when you have a question.
